Diapering Best Practices

rrespective of the brand of disposable diaper you choose, the process of wrapping a diaper around your baby remains the same. Let’s take a quick look at how you can diaper your baby.
  1. Gather your diapering materials

Get prepared by gathering some diapers, wet wipes (or warm water and cotton balls), ointments (to prevent rashes on your baby’s sensitive skin), and any other stuff that you need to change the diaper. Make sure that the changing area is safe and secure. Check for absence of cords or any other distractions for the baby.

  2. Lay your baby down

Position your baby on the changing table or changing pad or simply a flat bed. Now, unfasten the old diaper; however, don’t pull it away from the baby’s bottom, for the time being—this ensures that the baby lets go of any matter when his or her skin gets in touch with the outside cold air.

Note: Be around at all the times because your baby might wiggle and get hurt in your absence.

  3. Hold on to your baby

Hold your baby by the ankles and lift up his or her bottom. Clean up the bottom of your baby with wet wipes—always wipe from front to back, especially for your baby girl, to avoid urinary tract infections. Once you are done with a wipe, invert it and cover the old diaper with the used side of the wipe facing downwards. Repeat the process with more wipe(s) till your baby’s skin is clean. Now, pull the wipes and old diaper from under the baby and keep it away.

Note: If the bottom of your baby is heavily soiled, feel free to use the clean part (typically the front part) of the old diaper to get rid of the extraneous matter.

If your baby squirms while you change the diapers, sing to him or her.

For your baby boy, place a clean diaper over his penis while changing. Exposure to fresh, cold air while changing can often make him urinate—on you, on walls, on everything that is around.

  4. Position the new diaper

Position the new, fresh diaper under your baby and secure it with fasteners. Make sure that the diaper is tied snug enough to avoid the messy leakages.

Note: If yours is a newborn baby, fold down the upper part of the diaper to make space for the umbilical cord.

  5. Dress your baby, throw the trash, and clean your hands

Put back clothes on your baby. Take the old diapers and soiled wipes (the ones that you kept away), make a ball of them by overlapping the fasteners of the old diaper, and discard them in a trash bin or diaper pail. After handing over the baby to someone else or ensuring that the baby is lying down, properly wash your hands in the sink.
